Our Sports and Social Club welcomes new members, families and friends. It is a family friendly Social Club including a Bar and Café at the heart of our village community and open to everyone.
The Club offers a fully stocked bar with a full range of beers (including guest beers), wines and spirits. It has a large and flexible amount of space that supports a variety of community activities.
The Lounge Bar is used most weekends for entertainment.
Cloakrooms, including full disabled facilities are just by the main entrance and wheelchair access is available by way of a ramped access.
A large room with the main bar area, a mixture of seating, a small stage area and dance floor. This room connects to the new Club garden and has a wonderful view of the Recreation Ground through the two new large windows (see the refurbishment project page for more details).
The Lounge bar benefits from Wifi and a projector with connections for your devices.
- During our normal opening hours members can reserve tables / space in the Lounge Bar. Ideal for smaller parties.
- During our closed hours members can hire the Lounge Bar for events such as wakes & christenings or business meetings/training sessions.
- Food / buffets by arrangement only and can be provided.
- On Saturday evenings it is possible for members to hold a larger party/event in the Lounge bar by reserving the majority of the space. This is subject to availability and Club events will take priority. You may also have entertainment (e.g. a disco). The maximum number of guests is indicated in the lettings policy. However, it is not possible to guarantee exclusive use and other members may also be using the area.
A comfortable sports bar area with a large flat screen TV, full sized snooker table, pool table and electronic darts boards.
There is an outside covered smoking area accessed from this room.
This bar also has its own access (with ramp) and cloakroom facilities.
Overlooking the Harwell Recreation Ground, and completely accessible to everyone, our Garden is the perfect place to enjoy the warmer days and nights.
The Garden plays host to our popular barbeque events and our fiercely competitive Aunt Sally league team – Aunt Sally matches happen on a Wednesday evening.
Our varied and regular social activities include Food Nights, Quizzes, Bingo, Bands, Afternoon Teas, Family Discos, – check out our Event Listings to see what’s on.
Outside of normal operating hours we can offer excellent and versatile facilities for all kinds of business courses, parties, workshops and funerals. Due to the recent reorganisation, exclusive use is now only available outside of normal operating hours. During operating hours, tables and space can be reserved for parties and functions. Catering, kitchen facilities and a staffed bar can be made available.
During normal opening hours, Members who have held membership for at least six months can reserve space in the lounge bar for a personal party/function. This is ideal for smaller parties. Sadly we cannot host 18th or 21st parties.
For wakes or other events outside our normal opening hours anyone can hire the lounge area for private or business use. Ask for a member of the committee to show you round and discuss options. The Club is supported by Harwell Rugby Club, the Didcot and District Snooker League, the local Darts League for Men and Women, Harwell Tennis Club, two Aunt Sally teams, Harwell & Hendred Youth Football Club, a Craft Club, a Cribbage team and a Cribbage/Mah Jong Club. New team players and members are always welcome, so do come along and let us know if you would like to join any of our activities.
The Harwellian is proud to support the local community and provides a Community Café sponsored by St Matthews church from September to May. The café provides free tea, coffee and cake on Thursday afternoons.
The club also holds a monthly ‘Music for Memories’ afternoon for people living with dementia and their carers.
The Harwellian was previously The Royal British Legion club and we continue to fully support our past and present servicemen and women, in support of the charity appeals organised by the Harwell RBL branch. The club became disaffiliated from The British Legion in 2107 and is now a not for profit organisation run by a Committee for the benefit of its members.
Since then, he club has undergone a major refurbishment including creating a new lounge with stage area, new windows, new toilets, addition of solar panels and a new garden area.
The Club membership has diversified considerably and the Club can now claim to be a genuine community-based club with a membership drawn from all segments of the local community. Its main objective is to provide a central meeting point and a relaxing environment for its members and guests.
The management of the Club is controlled by the executive committee. The committee meets regularly once a month to manage the club’s affairs and always looking at ways to improve the club and its facilities for the benefit of the members.
